Gulf Family Visas: More Than Just a Salary Number
For expatriates in the GCC, sponsoring a family is a multi-step process where the minimum salary is just the first hurdle. The regulations are designed to ensure that families will be well-supported, and each country has its own unique set of rules.
Why Do Salary Thresholds Exist?
Governments across the Gulf implement minimum salary requirements for family visas for several key reasons:
Ensuring Financial Stability: To guarantee the sponsor can comfortably cover housing, schooling, healthcare, and daily living costs for their family.
Maintaining Living Standards: To prevent overcrowding and financial strain on both the families and the country’s social infrastructure.
Economic Planning: To align the expatriate population with the country’s economic goals, often by encouraging skilled professionals to bring their families.
Country-by-Country: Key Factors Beyond Salary
Here’s what you need to consider in addition to the numbers:
Saudi Arabia (KSA)
Profession is Paramount: This is the most critical factor in KSA. The government maintains a list of eligible professions. If your job title isn’t on this list, you cannot sponsor your family, even if you earn a high salary.
Official Portal: The entire application is digital and processed through the Istiqdam service on the Absher platform.
United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Accommodation Clause: The UAE offers flexibility. The salary requirement is often lowered (e.g., from AED 4,000 to AED 3,000) if the employer provides housing, as evidenced in the employment contract.
Tenancy Contract: A valid tenancy contract registered through Ejari (in Dubai) or Tawtheeq (in Abu Dhabi) is mandatory.
Qatar
Accommodation and Profession: Similar to the UAE, the threshold can be lowered from QAR 10,000 to around QAR 6,000 for certain technical or specialized professions, provided the employer offers free family accommodation.
Metrash2 is Key: All visa processes, including family sponsorship, are managed efficiently through the MOI’s Metrash2 mobile app.
Kuwait
Strict Enforcement: Kuwait has raised its salary cap in recent years to manage demographic balances and currently maintains one of the highest thresholds (KWD 800). There are very few exceptions to this rule.
Oman & Bahrain
General Flexibility: While these countries have lower official thresholds (around OMR 300 and BHD 400 respectively), the approval can still be case-specific. The authorities (Royal Oman Police and Bahrain’s NPRA) will assess the overall application, including the profession and the size of the family being sponsored.
Universal Requirements Across the GCC
Regardless of the country, you will almost always need:
Attested Marriage Certificate: Authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your home country and the GCC country’s embassy.
Attested Birth Certificates: For all children being sponsored.
Valid Tenancy Contract: Proof of suitable accommodation.
Valid Passports and Residence Permits: For both the sponsor and the family members.
Using a salary threshold tool is an excellent starting point, but always follow up by consulting official government portals and ensuring all your documentation is in order.
