Passport Validity Date Checker 2026
A passport that expires too soon can stop a visa or a boarding pass. Enter two dates and get an instant pass or fail against the 3-month Schengen or 6-month rule.
Passport Validity Checker
Two dates and a destination — an instant pass or fail with your exact required date.
3-Month vs 6-Month Passport Rules
Passport validity rules exist so that you can always leave the country, even if your trip is delayed. There are three common patterns:
| Rule | Typical destinations | Counted from |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months beyond stay | Schengen area (and EU states applying the Schengen code) | Planned departure from the area |
| 6 months | Many countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America | Usually arrival; sometimes end of stay |
| Duration of stay | Some countries, often for specific nationalities | End of stay |
Because rules differ by nationality and change over time, this checker treats 6 months as the safe default outside Schengen and counts from your last day of stay. If you pass that test, you generally pass the looser versions too.
The Schengen Rule in Detail
Under the Schengen Borders Code and Visa Code, a travel document must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen area, must have been issued within the previous 10 years, and must contain at least 2 blank pages. A passport issued 10 years and 1 month ago may still have months left — and still fail the issuance test.
The 6-Month Rule
Countries such as the UAE, Thailand, Indonesia and many others commonly expect 6 months of validity. Airlines enforce these rules at check-in using shared databases, so a passport that is a few days short can mean denied boarding. Some countries publish exemptions for certain nationalities (for example, the US “six-month club” agreements), but you should rely on an exemption only after confirming it on an official source.
Renew Before You Apply
If your passport fails or leaves only a thin buffer, renew it before submitting your visa application. Visas are usually linked to your passport number, and many embassies limit visa validity to the passport’s expiry. Renewing after approval can mean transferring or re-applying for the visa. Check your national passport office’s processing times and add them to your plan.
Blank Pages and Passport Condition
- Blank pages: many destinations want 2 blank visa pages; some want more for multiple entries.
- Condition: water damage, torn pages or a loose cover can lead to refusal at the border.
- Emergency passports: often not accepted for visa-free entry or long stays.
How This Checker Works
The tool adds 3 or 6 calendar months to your last day of stay to get a required valid-through date, then compares it with your passport expiry. The buffer is the number of days between the two: positive means you have room to spare, negative means you are short. All calculations run in your browser. Next, list everything else you need with the Document Checklist Generator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the passport validity rule 3 months or 6 months?
It depends on the destination. For Schengen countries, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the Schengen area. Many other countries, including much of Asia, the Middle East and Africa, expect 6 months of validity beyond your arrival or stay. Some countries only require validity for the length of your stay, but 6 months is the safest default.
Is the 3 or 6 months counted from arrival or from departure?
Schengen counts 3 months from your planned departure from the Schengen area. Many 6-month rules are counted from the date of entry, but some airlines and countries apply them to the end of the stay. This checker counts from your last day of stay, which is the more cautious reading.
Should I renew my passport before applying for a visa?
If your passport fails or barely passes the rule, renewing first is usually wiser. A visa is normally tied to a passport number, and some embassies will not issue a visa that runs past the passport expiry, so renewing after approval can mean extra steps.
How many blank pages does my passport need?
Requirements vary, but many destinations ask for at least 2 blank visa pages, and Schengen requires at least 2 blank pages in the travel document. Check the specific embassy rule and keep enough empty pages for entry and exit stamps.
Can the airline deny boarding even if the country is more lenient?
Yes. Airlines check passport validity against their own databases at check-in and can refuse boarding if the passport does not meet the rule they apply. Meeting the stricter rule is the simplest way to avoid problems at the airport.
